Causing a Ruckus in an Invisible Scene: Chicago Pinoy Music Artists Making Themselves Heard

Filipinos in America have been labeled "The Invisible Minority" partly because our ease of assimilation due to colonial mentality, but also because of our lack of visibility as a united community. This label cannot be truer in Chicago; more than one hundred thousand Filipinos live in the Chicago land area but despite the great number, we are a scattered and an invisible unit. Despite being one of the largest Asian American communities in the area, there is the apparent invisibility of Filipinos in the wider community, in politics and the media.

For this reason, Filipino-American artists in Chicago struggle to reach a wider audience and gain support from a decentralized community. Filipinos on the West Coast and the East Coast enjoy a thriving and enviable music scene; the same cannot be said about the Midwest.

All of this is about to change! February 9, 2008 will mark a turning point in the history of the Filipino music scene in Chicago. This is the date for the Pinoy Ruckus Fest; a festival that will gather and showcase the most talented musicians in the Chicagoland across multiple genres for a rocking night of Original Pilipino Music.

On November 13, 2007, Pinoy Ruckus Productions spearheaded a Filipino Artists' Summit to discuss the future of the Filipino music scene in Chicago. Queen Albert's, a Filipino bar/hotspot on Chicago's north side opened its doors to representatives from Bagwis, ACI9, Abakus, SO3 (Sons of the Third), Madrhymes, Lucidblur and Pinoy Ruckus Productions, with the aims of unifying Chicago area music artists and creating a new scene in Chicago. Also in attendance was Pochoy Labog of Dicta Liscense during his visit to Chicago.

Throughout the night, artists, band managers and producers got to know each other, talked about creating cohesion among the bands and breaking the barriers among diverse artists in the scene. Challenges of being an artist and promoting artists in Chicago were voiced out; one of the most resounding comments was the lack of support given to bands from Filipino establishments in the area. While these businesses are more than happy to support the array of big name acts coming from the Philippines who currently saturate the scene. When a band asks some of these businesses for support, they are rejected with the reason that "rock shows are not monetarily viable."

It was decided that to respond to this issue, solidarity among the artist themselves is needed first. They have decided that by bonding together, supporting each other and tapping the resources they have, they can solidify the Filipino music scene and change the mentality of the community. It was said that this unity is not only good for artists but for the whole community. It starts with the artists and hopefully; it will extend to the rest of the community, including local business and institutions.

It was decided that there are a lot of talent within community and it should not only be the musicians but visual artists and writers that can also be brought into the scene to participate. A community website was created to open communication, feature artists, gig schedules, music videos, photos and reviews of events at www.chicagopinoymusic.ning.com.

It was then that they decided that they should not limit themselves to being front acts to larger out of town performers, but to take the stage to become the main acts themselves, to be their own producers and creators of a positive local Pinoy Music Scene in Chicago that promotes cooperation. The idea of a Pinoy Ruckus Fest was then established. Aside from the music fest, a compilation of songs that are exclusively from Chicago artists was planned. Proceeds from the music festival will be used to finance the compilation.

It is said that great talent cannot be hidden; Chicago has a great amount of talent that unfortunately has been hidden. Los Angeles boasts a great music scene, New York also has their scene; the New Year will bring much bigger and greater things to the artists of Chicago, it's their turn to rock!

Hi Demetrio,

Sorry I'm just getting back to you right now. I would love to organize a student kultural workshop. I end school on the 15th, but I would be more than happy to help plan and pursue this event until May even if I'm not able to personally attend!

Best,
Stephanie
